Australia’s first Indigenous Australian Olympian to compete at a Winter Olympics 2018, is none other than figure skater Harley Windsor. First aboriginal athlete Harley Windsor and his Russia-born skating partner Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya represented Australia in winter Olympics in 2018.
The pair gave a clean short performance to Hidden Citizen’s cover version of the Rolling Stones’ from classic song Paint It Black. The performance granted them with a score of 61.55.
But the score wasn’t enough to enter the top 16 and to progress to Thursday’s free skate. Before moving out of the top 16, the pair 18th of the 22 entrants. Whereas, China’s Wenjing Sui and Cong Hang set 82.39 benchmarks in PyeongChang.

The loss caused a bit of sadness that they could have done a lot better than this performance. Windsor expressed his thoughts to reporters saying,
“I thought that we would have got a lot better score than what we did,” “But it is what it is, and there’s nothing we can change about it now.
He added,
“We had the potential quite easily to qualify but (for) just little mistakes and the scores not being what we expected. “But knowing our best – even not our best – could have qualified us, is a good relief.”
Harley’s fans were not the only one who supported him, but his family was there too. His mother in the stands while his father was tuning in from Sydney. Harley said,
“It felt good to have the support,” “It’s pretty special knowing so many people were cheering me on.
He continued,
“The attention has been amazing, and I just hope I’ll be a bit of a role model now,” “Hopefully more Indigenous kids get into winter sports.”
Moving onto his career which started in 2005 after an ice rink caught his interest in Blacktown. In late 2006, Galina and Andrei Pachin coaching him in Canterbury. Going through the competitions as singles, Harley started training in pairs.
Harley met his skating pair Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya through Russia-based coach Nina Mozer. She suggested a tryout between them, so in December 2015, the pair started skating together. The coaches believed that they would make a good match because of their similar technique and body types after observing various tryout.
With the help of Mozer, a request made by the Australian skating association released Alexandrovskaya from Russia.
Harley has been the champion of 2017 World Junior and 2017-18 Junior Grand Prix Final. On the senior level, Harley and Alexandrovskaya are the 2017 CS Nebelhorn Trophy bronze medalists, 2017 Australian national, and 2017 CS Tallinn Trophy champions.
Even though there is hard work, it’s not enough unless some luck acts on the job. It just happened to the Australian Pair Skaters Harley and Alexandrovskaya, in spite of their hard work they could not enter the finals.
Australia’s Indigenous boy Harley has made an impression on his female fans and attracted attention due to his unique story. Indeed he is an excellent talent to Australia, placing 18th at the Winter Olympic Games 2018.
