DISCOVER: Barei's New Single & Video "I Don't Need To Be You"

Last year, Barei stunned us all with her amazing entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, “Say Yay!”; representing Spain. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform as well as we all thought it would. This week, she released her new single “I Don’t Need To Be You”.

The music video premiered on Vevo on 3 March 2017, it was available on YouTube in Spain only, until 6 March where it was internationally released. The single was available globally on Friday.

For this song and music video, Barei teamed up with Kidz On The Block, a teen dance ensemble. The entire project is a stop bullying campaign, and the video has a narrative clip at the end.

The video also was highly teased by Barei on her YouTube Channel.

This is not the only promotion Barei has done for this song and music video. She has continuously used the Twitter hashtag “#stopbullying“, as well as created a Spotify Stop Bullying playlist, which can be found at the bottom of this article.

The music video is a pure performance visual showcasing the dancing talent of Barei and the Kidz On The Block. The choreography is incredible, especially since it looks easy, but it’s really not. Everyone is in perfect sync, and Barei looks stunning. There is a pivotal point in the choreography where they have included the iconic “Say Yay!” footwork; which is definitely a great look-back at her Eurovision entry, and it certainly isn’t as easy as they make it out to be.

Just as you think the music video is ended, we’re treated to a narrative clip, set in a classroom. We watch as the students laugh at a girl who falls to the floor, missing the chair she had planned to sit on. She gets up off the floor, walks up to the blackboard and writes “I Don’t Need To Be U”, turning the ‘U’ into a smiley face. The ending scene sees the girl smile before the hashtag #stopbullying appears.

This marks the first independant release from Barei. She parted ways with Universal Music, who signed her due following her win on Objetivo Eurovisión in 2016, Spain’s national selection for Eurovision. At the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, she came 22nd with 114 points, we totally think she deserved a better placing.
