Ballard met Katherine at Brigham Young University in Provo, where he studied Spanish and Political Science between 1994 and 1999.
After several years of dating, the two married and started their own family.
Around 2013, Ballard became disenchanted with his federal job and wanted to do something to help kids he often had to leave behind due to the issues of orders.
Though his decision was firm, he was unsure about the practicality, given that his family might have to struggle with financial issues.
At the time, he had six children. However, Katherine supported his decision and asked him to remain firm on his commitment.
She could have readily agreed to his hesitation to leave his job due to financial reasons, but she chose to support him, which bolstered Ballard’s confidence in launching O.U.R. in 2013.
When the pair were adopting their two children from Haiti, Katherine felt pulled and impressed to help more kids unite with their adoptive families.
She then founded Children Need Families (CNF), an organization dedicated to meeting the most intrinsic needs of a child, to have a permanent family and home.
CNF works in partnership with adoption agencies, adoptive families, and orphanages worldwide.

Ballard’s two kids, Nicole and Nicol, were rescued in one of O.U.R.’s first operations. The kids lived in an illicit orphanage in Haiti where a trafficker intended to sell them for $10,000 each.
Fortunately, Ballard and the O.U.R team completed a successful undercover operation with the Haitian police, liberating 28 children, including Colin and Coline.
The Ballard family adopted the brother and sister following an adoption process over three years. Rescued in February 2014, the kids finally came home in March 2018.
After the rescue operation, the Haitian government could not find any documents related to Colinw’s birth, so they gave him the birth date of February 19. He is currently 12 years old.
When Coline came from Haiti, Ballard’s daughter Della was worried after learning Coline’s birthday had been given to her arbitrarily because there was no birth certificate or any other documents.
She insisted that she share her birthday with Colinw. As they were of the same age and are now sisters, they decided to share the same birthday -November 19.

In 2019, Ballard’s sister-in-law and O.U.R. Chief Financial Officer, Tevya, resigned from her post and founded a new anti-human trafficking nonprofit organization with several other former executives.
